Midfielder, Fernando Monge was selected to the PDL Team of the Week after the Sounders U-23’s dramatic and exciting win over the Portland Timbers U-23s.
Monge has been a very consistent and solid midfielder for the Sounders in the 2012 season this far. Not only was he able to get an assist to the crucial Cascadia victory but he also scored the game-winning goal.
On Friday night, the Sounders U-23 trailed 1-0, before tieing and then taking the lead. The Timbers equalized the game at 2-2 and then again at 3-3 before the stage was set for Fernando Monge to be the Sounders’ hero. The Sounders saved one last moment of inspiration for the 88th minute. A corner kick was whipped in for the Sounders and to finish it off was Monge. He reacted by smashing it towards goal and ended up in the back of the net.
Aodhan Quinn and Sean Okoli were also in the PDL Honorable Mention.
In the 67th minute the Sounders received a penalty kick and to step up to take it was the freshmen midfielder playing for Akron University, Aodhan Quinn. He put his left footed shot into the bottom right corner to put the Sounders up 3-2.
Sean Okoli continues to be a threat in the attack and this was no different the Timbers U-23s game. With his great speed and strength, he was able to constantly keep the Timbers defense on their toes and cause multiple problems for them.
